Limitations of Soil Amplification Provisions in the 2002 Indian Seismic Code
The design response spectra of the 2002 Indian seismic code are compared with analytical and empirical results, and design spectra of other major national codes. Amplification at 37 sites in India is studied analytically using 1-D wave propagation. Next, Generation Ground-Motion Attenuation (NGA) models are used to obtain the spectra for corresponding site classes using different magnitude-distance (M-R) pairs. Average amplification factors for the four selected NGA models are compared with the design codes and analytical results and it is observed that there are considerable differences among them. We consider the provisions for local soil amplification in the current Indian seismic code to be inadequate and in need of improvement.
