Malaysian port security: issues and challenges
The 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States led to a concern over the vulnerability of the international shipping industry and national ports to possible maritime terrorism. Under United States pressure, a range of international security initiatives were introduced, impacting on national sovereignty and incurring significant problems to developing nations. This paper examines these issues from a Malaysian perspective in which it highlights the adoption of key security measures and also sheds light on the main challenges affecting the maritime sector and some recommendations to further strengthen the sector.
