Stourhead revisited & the pursuit of meaning in gardens
The issue of meaning in gardens and designed landscapes has preoccupied n'lany critics over the past 20 years. Their reflections are basically of two kinds: general and conceptual, on the one hand; and attempts, on the other, to explore the issue of meaning in the case of one specific site. The more general discussions of meaning may occasionally invoke actual gardens (it is after all rather useful to test generalizations against particular instances!), but they have been more concerned to establish principles and criteria for ascertaining what designed sites, generally considered, can meanI. Stourhead is, however, one particular site that has elicited a considerable and extended scrutiny that is also instructive about the more general issue of how the topic of meaning(s) in gardens might be approached.2
