This paper examines the possible conflict between competition and regional policy in the Common Market. It suggests that competition policy towards regional aids can have a positive influence on the development of backward regions by limiting aids in less backward regions. The Community's competition policy towards regional aids is analysed, and a comparison of regional problems with budgetary expenditure on regional aid is made. The paper concludes that expenditure on regional aids does not always reflect the intensity of regional problems when seen in a Community-wide extent.
