Energy Conservation in Buildings and the Indoor Environment—A Review
Energy conservation in buildings has led to a renewed response to the natural environment in building design. The new term “passive design system “is a restatement of the response to the natural environment to achieve thermal comfort and visual acuity. The development of thermal comfort scales and indices is briefly described and appraised. A proposal of cooling without air-conditioning is made. The development of research in ventilation is briefly described, and the need to balance health requirements and energy conservation is mentioned. The use of natural lighting to supplement artificial lighting is re-introduced as an energy conservation measure.
