Dimensionless isovelocity contours in rectangular cross sections by harmonic mean distances
A simple model is proposed to predict the dimensionless isovel contours in straight ducts and open-channels by harmonic mean distances (HMD). It is assumed that each element of boundary influences the velocity at an arbitrary point in cross-section. Harmonic mean of distances between any point within the cross-section and a wall or free-surface flow is defined in the model and applied to calculate the dimensionless isovel contours in rectangular channels. The kinetic energy and momentum correction factors and the ratio of maximum to mean velocity are also calculated by isovel patterns. Relation between kinetic energy and momentum correction factors is extracted as α − 1 = 2.955 (β − 1).
