A hydroelectric landscape in the Italian Alps: elements, meanings, and design cues in a historical hydroelectric development in Alta Valtellina
A large number of alpine valleys have been the stage of a century-long process of hydroelectric development, which substantially modified and modelled the landscape. Despite the presence of important infrastructure, both active and unused, the image of the Alps as a hydroelectric territory has generally not been integrated in the perception of the landscape, usually valued for its surviving natural and rural features. Investigating the hydroelectric district of Alta Valtellina, in the Italian Alps, has helped to both outline the components of the hydroelectric network and identify the traces of the territory's past configurations, allowing for representation that reaches beyond such landmarks as the imposing dams or architecturally significant power plants, and constituting a heritage worthy of preservation. Reading this landscape unveils a series of themes and cues to be addressed by means of design, which should aim at integrating the historical hydroelectric infrastructure as a layer of meaning in the contemporary alpine landscape.
