Practical workflow for cultural heritage digitalization and management: a case study in Vietnam
The introduction of Heritage Building Information Modeling (HBIM) and 3D laser digitization is seen as a steppingstone toward heritage conservation and enhancing the intangible value of cities worldwide. However, the limit on experience labors, equipment investment budget, and the concealment of firms in a competitive field constrain the approach to digital heritage in Vietnam. Therefore, this study aims to (1) generate the optimal and specific workflow for the practical application of 3D Laser Scanning in heritage, from data capturing to processing and Scan-to-HBIM; (2) evaluate the potential application of Scan-to-HBIM and Hi-tech integration in the tangible cultural heritage preservation. This study applies Scan-to-HBIM to an ancient building in Vietnam, beginning with a reconstructed BIM of the structure and integrating it with current Hi-tech technologies for operations and maintenance, and tourism promotion. The primary result of the study is a practical workflow for CH digitization and management that details personnel requirements, implementation processes, and quality controls. Besides, the limitations and common errors encountered when applying technology in this field are discussed, and specific solutions are provided. This study contributes to resolving the practical issues encountered in historical scanning projects from Scan-to-HBIM.
