Story-high brick speeds building in France
The manufacture of large hollow clay brick for building has been under development for some time in both England and France. Now it has become a reality in France. An entire village of single family houses is reported to be under construction in Southern France using this system. The manufacturer and builder is Guiraud of Toulouse, France. The backbone of the new system is the large hollow clay brick, 250 by 60 by 30 cm. in size. It can be easily handled by a light weight lifting device at the job site for easy installation. The brick are placed on end on a bed of cement on the foundation, and a metal frame is used to support the brick during the erection and curing period. A channel between the brick also is filled with concrete to maintain a strong solid wall. Pre-assembled metal frames are used for doors and windows. Traditional roof trusses and roofs can be used to complete the structure.
