Influence of amorphous silica on the hydration of tricalcium aluminate
Amorphous SiO2 influences 3CaO x Al2O3 hydration in both pastes and suspensions. Two heat peaks are found by isothermal calorimetry during the paste hydration of 3CaO x Al2O3. The addition of amorphous SiO2 causes the second heat peak to shift towards shorter reaction times and become more pronounced. In suspensions, the change in ion concentration in the water phase is not influenced by the presence of amorphous SiO2 exept that the change in concentration occurs more quickly. Quantitative X-ray analyses show that more 3CaO x Al2O3 x 6H2O is present in suspensions containing amorphous SiO2 than in SiO2-free suspensions at equal hydration times.
