A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Hardening conditions of cements obtained by addition of aluminium oxychloride in a powder consisting of calcium aluminate, alpha-alumina, calcined magnesia and lime, have been studied. Binding of powder is caused by hydrolysis of oxychloride in basic medium with aluminium hydroxide gel formation which binds the whole powder particles. These cements mixed with various oxide aggregates give refractory concretes which may be used up to 1500C. Properties of some of these concretes have been studied. Their compressive strength is lower than hydraulic refractory concretes but their setting is very easy, they harden in a few minutes and their cost is low. Applications of oxychloride cements are numerous: forming ultra-pure alumina articles, mortar sealing, kilns coating, insulating concretes, ceramic moulds for fine metal casting.
