It is current practice when buying refractories of the aluminium silicate type to relate the price offered to the alumina content. This also applies to refractory concretes, although the binder-aggregate combination gives different results with regard to refractoriness under load. It is the same even for aggregates or additives which do not expand in the highest temperature zones. The refractoriness-under-load results are explained by analysis of the phases by X-ray diffraction and polarising microscopy. The combination of these three methods of investigation shows that the causes of the refractoriness under load test results may be explained, and thus serve as a basis for producing a more economically viable product.
