Prospects for heat-resisting materials using organosilicon polymers
An organometallic polymer, polycarbosilane, was transformed into a continuous beta-SiC fibre with high tensile strength of 350 kg/sq. mm. and Young's modulus of 30 t/sq. mm. Furthermore, polycarbosilane as the binder was introduced into the powder of SiC or Si3N4 and the shaped body mixture was heated at about 1300 Cel, without hot press. Compressive strength of the product-shaped body was extremely high, about 10000 kg/sq. cm. Thus, polycarbosilane polymer can be a fundamental element in a variety of heat resisting materials, i.e. SiC fibre and shaped bodies of Si3N4 or SiC. (Author)
