Formulation of Coupled Lateral-Rotational Foundation-Soil Interaction of Building Structures
In this paper an analysis is made of the combined lateral and rocking motion of the foundation of an N-mass structure coupled to a two-dimensional elastic half-space the free-field motion of which simulates an earthquake. The appropriate Lamb problem is solved in terms of integrals convergent in the Cauchy sense and three pairs of Volterra integral equations are derived: one pair neglecting base-mass effects and the other two pairs including them. The Lamb solution appears to be insufficiently smooth to permit the required differentiations of some integrals in two of the pairs of integral equations because of numerical divergence.
