Cladding mild steel with copper-nickel sheet
The water-boxes of some de-salination plant in service in Malta since 1969, were made from mild steel clad internally with 1.2 mm thick 90/10 copper-nickel sheet, to avoid corrosion. Interest has been shwon in building further plant in this way, some with thinner linings and others with thicker. Further work has shown that the MIG spotwelding process, without a pilot hole, is also suitable for fastening 0.6, 0.8 and 2 mm thick sheet to mild steel, and the welds have satisfactory compositions and mechanical properties.
