Coal gasification - an alternativ in clean energy production
This paper briefly reviews the energy supply situation existing today within the United States, primarily the impending shortages of natural gas, and discusses a means of alleviating this shortage by utilizing the one remaining natural resource existing in vast quantities within the lower 48 states - coal. A coal quasification plant is propodes to be built in the Four Corners Area of New Mexico by Western Gasification Company, and the plant is presently under design by Fluor Engineers and Constructors Inc. The author describes the process used to gasify the coal and discusses the technical, environmental, and economical aspects of the plant design.
