Simplified soil-structure interaction analysis with strain dependent soil properties
Recent work regarding the response of above-ground soil structures, such as dams, has indicated the need to use strain dependent soil properties. Unlike other building materials soil stiffness and damping properties are highly strain dependent. The application of these concepts to problems in soil-structure interaction has also been suggested. Without commenting on the appropriateness of this extension to soil-structure interaction problems, it is suggested that answers similar to those given by the strain dependent solution of finite element models can be obtained more simply by the use of lumped-parameter impedance functions.
