Acoustic emission behavior of sand as used in foundation bearing capacity
A large scale laboratory bearing capacity experiment was performed showing a very strongh correspondence between load and acoustic emission counts. In this experiment failure was clearly defined, which is a distinct improvement over existing procedures in which failure is not so easily observed and must be estimated. A potential use of the technique in monitoring a building fountation in a mine subsidence area is discussed where preliminary acoustic emission rates are high and a complete monitoring scheme has been proposed to the owner.
