Laboratory simulation of pipeline ductile fracture
Nippon Kokan KK has developed, at its Technical Research Centre, an improved method of simulating in the laboratory the ductile fracture propagation in high pressure gas pipelines. It is claimed that the new method is both faster and less expensive than full scale field fracture testing; one test, which is completed in a day, is claimed to cost about Pfund Sterlin 80.00. Conventional field testing could run into hundreds of thousands of pounds and require from one to three months to prepare and execute.
