Control strategies for the activated sludge process
Most wastewater treatment processes are designed as high-capacity, self-regulating processes that can be operated over a wide range of loading without significant performance loss. Productivity and efficiency is sacrificed to obtain this rangeability. However, as is evidenced by a well-established trend in the process industries, it is becoming increasingly cost-effective to operate a plant at a level closer to its limiting conditions through improved control systems. This article presents control strategies for three activated sludge process configurations.
