Computer control of large-scale wastewater treatment plant
This paper describes the results of experiments on analog and digital DO/air control systems conducted at the Mikawashima Sewage Works in Tokyo. The experiments revealed that analog feedback control systems maintain dissolved oxygen concentration within plus minus 0.3 mg/l, and that digital control systems reduce the frequency of control valve action. The best quality effluent was observed when DO at the aeration tank outlet was controlled to 4 mg/l. Furthermore, an 18 % reduction of the air flow rate, compared with manual operation, was recorded under automatically controlled DO operation.
