A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The original design criteria are given for a box grider cable stayed road bridge, consisting of two carriageways in the centre span, with the deck supported by cross girders, and having two high towers made from six welded boxes at each end. Design modifications after a major accident involved strengthening the structure and reducing its overall weight by using a steel orthotropic deck equal to the full roadway width. The erection scheme, model wind tunnel tests and welding processes involved are described.
