Reverse osmosis in the metal finishing industry
Reverse osmosis (RO) technology has been employed in the metal finishing industry for recovering of plating chemical from rinse water as well as purification of mixed wastewater to allow its reuse. The attractive features of RO systems include: relatively low initial and operating costs compared to alternative separation processes, capability for continuous operation, simplicity of operation and maintenance, and minimal floor space requirements for the system installation. Three types of RO membran configurations used in commercially availabe units are discussed (tubular, spiral wound and hollow-fiber). A summary of experiments for examination of the performance and life of membranes that were commercially available at the time, as well as of advanced membranes with promising applicability is given.
