The paper gives a brief account of a new approach to the representation and analysis of homogeneous random fields. Attention is drawn to the problem of the excessive sensitivity (to the choice of correlation model) of the mean square derivatives upon which level excursion and extreme value statistics depend. This problem can be resolved for practical purposes by permitting some 'local averaging' of the random field under study.
