A combined conduction calorimeter and ultrasonic pulse velocity technique for monitoring the hydration/setting of Portland cement
Conduction calorimetry has been successfully used to identify different stages in the hydration of Portland cement and also as a means of ranking admixtures as accelerators or retarders. Classifications on this basis are essentially chemical in nature. In practical situations one is concerned with the physical process of a paste transforming into a hydrated solid. Calorimetry results do not lend themselves to consideration of factors such as the water reducing properties of the hydrating matrix. In an attempt to investigate properties such as these and to unify the physical and chemical processes occurring during the early stages of hydration of Portland cement a combined conduction calorimeter/ultrasonic pulse velocity technique has been developed.
