Moessbauer spectroscopy in cement manufacture
Amongst the various techniques and methods that are employed to characterize cement and clinker, the application of Moessbauer spectroscopy is relatively recent and is primarily restricted to laboratory investigations. In the previous studies on the cemtn clinker, quantitative and qualitative analysis for the four major phases (C3S, C2S, C3A and C4F) had been carried out using X-ray analysis, infrared spectroscopy and chemical analysis. Recently Moessbauer spectroscopy was applied for studying clinker and cement. Mohan et al. investigated the states of iron in a laboratory-prepared tricalcium silicate (C3S) sample by means of Moessbauer technique, three forms of iron were detected in the C3S structure. In the present work we studied the states of iron in the clinker raw mixture at different temperatures up to the clinker forming temperature, 1500 Cel. The results obtained provide new insights into the behaviour of the states of iron during the clinkerization process.
