Technical and economical study of a small-scale photovoltaic pumping system in Egypt
Among the possible uses of solar energy, the lifting of water for drinking or irrigation purposes is of interest in dry regions and other rural areas, particularly where underground water is available at a depth not very deep. The increasing cost of animal irrigation coupled with decreasing farm size and lack of utility grid or acceptable alternative power sources is causing interest in the use of solar photovoltaic system. This paper deals with the main system components (array, motor and pump), the choice of suitable type of each component, the attractive combination of them and their interactions characteristics. The results of these analyses are presented including water volume as a function of time of day and of year for the location 30 deg N latitude, Egypt. Finally, an economical feasibility study has been carried out. The net present value analysis has been used to compare photovoltaic pumping with oil-fueld engine having same power output (one HP).
