A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Mechanical properties of engineering ceramics are discussed in terms of general concepts, differences in behavior between ceramics and metals, long-term durability under stress, and the conceivable strength of future ceramics. For use as structural components, engineering ceramics have the advantage of high temperature durability and the disadvantage of brittleness. Efforts to accumulate reliable data and to develop strong ceramics have been quite successful. The future of engineering ceramics is bright.
