A framework for the performance appraisal of alternatives in the CAD of buildings at the early stages is proposed. Based primarily on the integration of several design aspects in a unified procedure, the performance appraisal computer system is characterized by a modular structure and a common database. Rather than the highly detailed analysis packages that are commonly available, each 'module' performs simplified analysis and performance appraisal of the building from a specific viewpoint such as structures/foundations, acoustics or energy consumption. The relevant design parameters calculated by a given module are stored for common access by the other modules in the database and finally, these are combined together in the search of an overall optimum solution. This would aid the designer in making rational decisions. Work is currently under way for the development of a structural module applicable to reinforced concrete buildings as well as a module to estimate energy demand through the building envelope.
