A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The development of telecommunications via microwave links has, in recent years, led to widespread use of radio terminal and repeater stations carrying a traffic level and having an importance equal at least to the radio terminal stations of the largest regional network centers. In regard to functional and structural complexity, there are no substantial differences between radio terminal and repeater towers, except for site selection. It is therefore important to make the correct choice between self-supporting steel lattice or reinforced concrete for the construction of these towers. Italian regulations governing the construction of steel structures (Act. N. 1086 of 5/11/71), though helpful in some respects, are inconclusive regarding the very special use of steel towers in telecommunications application. Therefore, this paper describes design criteria, limitations and range of applications of both steel and reinforced concrete towers with the intent of standardizing their characteristics for use in microwave radio link systems
