On the relationship between the finite element and finite difference methods
The integral equations which arise from application of the Galerkin-finite element to the convective-diffusion equation are examined to illustrate how this method represents differential equations. The formulae obtained are effectively spatial averages of standard finite difference equations written at a node. The truncation error in the finite element solution at a node is obtained for various nodal configurations.
