Flash-butt welding using mobile on-track machines
The techniques required to produce flash-butt welds on the track are somewhat different to those used in stationary plant, where there is no restriction on weight or longitudinal movement of one rail. Using a machine developed in the Soviet Union up to 10 welds an hour have been made with a mobile welder in Italy and Austria. First-class welds can be achieved, but the fact that upset force is a function of upset travel and is not directly measured calls for careful adjustment.
