Since the Browns Ferry incident, the spectre of fires at nuclear plants has been the focus of attention by NRC, the utilities, and the public. There are sophisticated hardware and software available - in the form of fire protection systems and equipment and training and fire-protection programs. Potential fire losses at nuclear facilities can be staggering. Thus, it is necessary to maximize fire-protection security and minimise chance of human error which cancels out the effectiveness of most protective systems and devices.
