Measuring earth pressures in embankment dams
Earth pressure measurements are necessary to obtain effective stresses from pore pressure measurements so that the magnitude and direction of principal stresses within an embankment dam can be assessed and to confirm resistance to hydraulic fracture. Accuracy of measured values depends more on the method of insulation than on cell characteristics. Recommendations are made about both aspects and proposals made for cell design.
