Passing floodwaters over embankment dams
While embankment dams are often cheaper to build than concrete structures, particularly in remote areas, the additional supplementary works such as diversion tunnels which have to be carried out sometimes add so much to the cost that they start to be as expensive as concrete dams. However, a specially developed facing, which allows floods to be passed over the face of the earth dam can reduce the additional costs considerably.
