Centralised control for management of a distributed heating system
In order to improve the energy consumption of a heating complex at the University of Otago a centralised computer control has been installed. This has been an experiment in multiple building control on a medium scale, requiring the fitting of control logic with a preexisting set of buildings and their heating subsystems. The function of the computer is to control the operating times of boilers, pumps, valves and ventilation located at various points in the complex. The article describes the procedures adopted in choosing an appropriate computer system, deciding on control strategy and ensuring that the total heating system operates in a reliable and efficient manner.
