Underground mining near large Australian dams
Underground coal mining is an important industry in New South Wales. Many of the mine workings are located under or adjacent to large dams and reservoirs. This article outlines practices currently used by the NSW Dams Safety Committee to ensure the continuing safety of the dams and reservoirs. Three examples of the systems of mining permitted and the monitoring methods employed are described and the implications of investigations on future mining proposals are discussed.
