Scaling in vertical tube, falling film evaporators
Experiments have been carried out to determine limits for calcium sulphate scale formation in thin film, vertical tube evaporation (VTE) plants. These limits were found to depend upon heat flux and brine flow rate as well as temperature and concentration. The formation of calcium sulphate scale in the VTE plant at Gibraltar has been in agreement with predictions of an empirical equation based upon the experimental results and developed with the aid of a simple model. The alkaline scaling limit must be found by experimentation on the plant by varying the residual alkalinity after acid dosing. However, in contrast to calcium sulphate scale, alkaline scale forms soft deposits in VTE plants and is readily removed.
