The effect of scale control additives on the corrosion rates of plant constructional materials
The use of acid addition to control alkaline scale formation in M.S.F. desalination plants results in a recirculating brine pH of 7.2 - 7.5. The use of an effective high temperature scale control additive results in a recirculating brine pH of 8.5 9.5. In laboratory tests the corrosion rate of ferrous metals was reduced by about 70 % and of non-ferrous metals by about 80 % as the brine pH was increased from 7.5 to 9.0. High recirculating brine pH should lead to better plant reliability and availability due to these lower corrosion rates.
