Prediction of the heat transfer rates in crystallizers
The pertinent heat transfer data for evaporating butane drops in aqueous solutions have been examined and a method for estimating the overall heat transfer coefficient of the crystallizer in the freezing process for desalting sea water is discussed. Calculations based on experimental measurements of the heat transfer coefficents for ice to brine and for brine to evaporating butane, together with estimates of the fraction of ice and butane in the crystallizer slurry, show that heat transfer from the brine to the evaporating butane drops is controlling. Also the turbulence generated by mixing is tentatively estimated not to be sufficient to break up the bubble-drop complex during the course of butane evaporation.
