An engineering approach to pulp mill odorous emission containment
Development of a pulp mill odorous emission containment system consists of three well-defined steps. First, containment objectives must be established. The extent of emission control will be dependent on both moral and legal commitments, as well as capital availability. Second, the emission points must be identified, and their content quantified, establishing physical and chemical properties. Third, the conceptual design of the emission containment system should be developed in line with the mill's operations, and chemical and water availability. This sets the basis for detailed engineering. Two emission containment cases are described in this paper. The first deals with an existing mill, meeting current and mandated discharge limitations. The second covers a system applicable to a new mill. In both cases, only modern commercially proven technology is utilized.
