Corrosion behaviour of AISI Cl018 carbon steel in high-velocity seawater
A first attempt at obtaining corrosion rate data on large specimens in high-velocity seawater has yielded considerable information in spite of experimental problems. The corrosion rates established both from weight-loss data and from measurement of pit depths has indicated a total unsuitability of carbon steel for use at high velocity. Because of the high-power requirements and operating cost of high-velocity loops, it is not feasible to operate a system with a flow channel appreciably larger in cross section than the one used. Because of this and because of the geometric constraints, quantitative interpretation of either linear or Tafel polarization curves will require a completely redesigned flow channel, preferably one in which inert counter electrodes of the same size as the test specimens are mounted in the opposing wall of the flow channel.
