Shakedown as a limit state
For structures under variable repeated load, the shakedown limit provides a more reasonable basis than the static collapse load for assessing structural sufficiency. The shakedown limit is the threshold beyond which the structure suffers 'damage' in the form of plastic deformation with each load cycle. This damage is either incremental collapse in which the structure reaches unacceptable deflections, or alternating plasticity leading to low cycle fatigue. In either case, failure does not occur in the first cycle, and a design life philosophy is needed to replace the load factor philosophy now used.
