Base isolation for earthquake protection of multi-storey shear structures
Recent researchers have used a one dimensional shear model to demonstrate the marked reduction in shear response ao a structure mounted on 'Base Isolation' system. In this paper the effect of a base isolation system on multi-storey shear structures is examined with particular regard to the magnitude and distribution of the maximum column shears arising from a given earthquake. A technique is presented for estimating the maximum expected column shears at every level of a multi-storey shear structure subjected to the design earthquake. This technique is then extended to allow the estimation of design column shears for a structure with varying internal viscous damping, subjected to one of a wide range of strong motion earthquakes.
