A probabilistic model for serviceability specifications
Structural design for serviceability limit states involves consideration of many parameters that interact in a complex manner. This paper describes a simple probabilistic model for the serviceability design situation. The model includes the more essential design parameters such as the uncertainties of loads and material properties, structural theory and human reactions to structural behaviour. It is used to derive design specifications through a process of cost optimization. Examples given of its application include design against the cracking of reinforced concrete beams, failure of exterior wall cladding units, excessive floor flexibility and the jamming of window frames due to the excessive deflections of lintel beams. (Hannebauer)
