Negative skin friction on piles due to field surcharge
The development of negative skin friction in a pile due to a fill surcharge is analysed in the form of an elastic circular rod embedded in a homogeneous soil layer underlain by a homogeneous, isotropic, elastic substratum of an infinite depth. The time-rate of the development of the pile force is incorporated by assuming that the embedding soil layer is consolidating in accordance with Terzaghi's one-dimensional consolidation theory. The pile force is shown to be governed by a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind, and this equation is solved numerically. Unlike the past analyses, the proposed solution allows the consideration of the compressibility of the substratum. (Hannebauer)
