The collapse behaviour of stiffened plates under combined axial and bending loads
The deck panels of a box-girder bridge must carry simulatneously axial loads because of the bending of the box as a beam and transverse loads from the vehicles. Similar conditions occur in ships and other structures. Designers are interested in defining the interaction effect of these loads upon the ultimate strength of a thin-walled stiffened plate. Fifteen full-scale panels with identical geometries and with bulbflat stiffeners were tested to destruction and the failure interaction diagramm drawn. It was found that it exhibited many unusual fetatures which have been explained by subsequent theoretical analyses.
