The response of an oscillator with soil stress-strain behaviour
The response of a single degree of freedom oscillator to harmonic excitation is calculated. The behaviour is based on a model developed by the author which has the nonlinear stress-strain and hysteretic damping properties associated with soil. It is shown that the response is similar to that of a bilinaer oscillator. However, the range of nonlinearity exhibited by soil is much greater than that usually considered in studies of nonlinear effects. Altough it is possible to describe a particular response by means of an equivalent linear oscillator with viscous damping the large range of the nonlinearity means that such a description is of limited value. Depending on the initial state, cyclic loading of soil produces a positive or a negative pore water pressure response. Positive pore pressure decreases effective stress and hence gives a softening effect whilst negative pore pressures give a hardening effect. These phenomena are shown to affect the initial response of the oscillator.
