A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Experiences relating to the design, fabrication, and testing of military bridges in aluminium-zinc-magnesium alloy and 18 % nickel maraging steel are discussed. During development of current bridges it became generally apparent that adequate warning of fracture was as important as obtaining the required service life. This is provided for by ensuring that cracks are readily detectable during routine inspections. Methods by which this has so far been achieved, and may be achieved in the future, are discussed.
