The use of carbon fibre composites for axially loaded tension/compression components
A brief survey of published work related to the use of fibre reinforced composites for axial loades components and space frame structures is presented. Design charts for the selection of minimum weight components in axial compression are shown to illustrate the effect of materials properties and laminate design, and to indicate the conflicting requirements of optimum force and robustness. Experimental work on pultruded components with conded tubular joints is presented to confirm the use of closed from solutions for the design of such joints with non-linear adhesives.
